Public Toilet Sucess
In 2022, Sandown Town Council approached Danfo to install a stand-alone public toilet building at a popular seaside resort in the town to enhance the offering to residents and visitors. The public toilet building consisted of 1 x DDA cubicle and 3 x standard unisex cubicles. Included in the design was the installation of a green sedum roof and a façade to fit on with a seaside area.
Planning applications, building regulations permission and consultation with Southern Water were necessary in order to proceed with groundworks and service provision which was also part of the scope of works.
Challenges
The site identified for the public toilet building was adjacent to a Southern water pumping station. In order to finalise the decision to install on that site we sought drawings and assurances from the utility company that here was no pipework underneath where we were planning to site the toilet.
All of our enquiries resulted in plans showing no pipework or infrastructure underneath the area where we proposed to dig the foundations.
When we started digging up the existing concrete base our machines hit a disused concrete storage tank underneath the ground with a membrane. Our works stopped immediately.
Overcoming challenges to install a public toilet
To overcome this challenge we consulted with the utility company to ascertain what the structure was and whether it was safe to work around.
The next day our project manager was on site assessing the options. We decided that the best outcome was to move the position of the proposed site across a metre. New drawings were produced the same day to make sure the moving of the proposed site would not interfere with other infrastructure.
The next day we were able to proceed thanks to the experience of our project manager and excellent relations with our sub-contractor. A day was lost but this was made up and the project was delivered on time and within budget for the Council.

Despite the setback, we were still able to deliver the public toilet facility on time and within budget, exceeding the Sandown Town Council's expectations. Our ability to overcome challenges and deliver high-quality work is a testament to our commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction.
