Procuring public toilets

Consulting

Public toilets create accessibility, and greater accessibility enables more people to move freely in a given area. In the long run, toilets create a safer environment. But they have to remain clean, inviting, in good repair and open. By procuring an effect rather than a product, we can make a difference. By procuring more than just a toilet building, we create safe, secure public spaces.

Public toilets create a sense of safety and security, especially if they are well-maintained, correctly situated and meet people’s varied needs.
– A public toilet’s job is to enable everybody, regardless of circumstances, to make use of public spaces, says Jonas Olsson, CEO of Danfo AB. Our job is to constantly develop public toilets to ensure they can do their job.
– We develop products that are vandal-proof, durable, easy to maintain, and developed to serve people’s needs and ensure their safety, says Daniel Lilja, a business developer at Danfo.

Safe, welcoming environment as strategy

As a buyer, you can award extra quality points for design – not just of the toilet itself but the exterior and how it fits into its setting. It creates a safer, more welcoming environment. It results in people circulating in the area during more hours of the day. Everybody benefits, especially commerce and tourism.

Buy services and ensure sustainability

Many municipalities don’t look at total cost when carrying out procurements. It’s important to look at total costs over time, including both operating and maintenance costs.
– By including proactive maintenance and inspections by skilled technical staff in their procurements, our customers gain access to our ability to anticipate problems, quickly repair damage and extend the useful life of public toilets, says Daniel Lilja. Regular cleaning and graffiti removal ensures that the toilets stay welcoming. We have toilet buildings that we have been operating for over 30 years, and in the long run, they end up being cheaper for the customer than it would have been to buy a toilet building without our service, expertise and commitment.

Public toilets as part of the circular economy

Danfo works actively with Agenda 2030 sustainability goals in order to create a circular business model. For the planet, for society and for the future.
– We renovate and maintain our toilets for a better user experience – but also for a sustainable future, says Daniel Lilja. When a toilet reaches the end of its useful life, we reuse and recycle the materials. Almost nothing is thrown away.

Public toilet Sweden

Helsingborg procured 41 public toilets including operations and maintenance

One city that is satisfied with its procurement is the City of Helsingborg, Sweden. They bought 41 toilets including a full range of services, from development and construction to operations and maintenance.
– Our selection process was based on several parameters, with lifecycle costs being the most important, says building surveyor Georg Hermann of the City of Helsingborg. As a public agency, we have to make the best possible use of tax money, and it is often a good idea to opt for solutions that cost a little more on the front end but provide lower annual operating costs.
